Biography
Taylor Tobin is an assistant professor in the physics group at Lyman Briggs College. Her research focus is observational astronomy, studying young and still-forming planets around other stars, as well as their birthplaces. She completed her Ph.D. in 2019 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, after which she completed postdocs at University of Notre Dame and University of Michigan.

Research
Taylor Tobin's research primarily centers on direct imaging of young planets and planet-forming disks around nearby stars. Directly imaging exoplanets provides a means to study both the planet's orbit as well as the light that it emits, which provides constraints on its composition and formation. Space-based telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope bypass the additional background noise of the Earth's atmosphere, allowing detection of fainter exoplanets around faint stars. Ground-based direct imaging on large telescopes can provide higher sensitivity for planets that orbit closer to bright host stars; these telescopes use Adaptive Optics and extreme Adaptive Optics to correct for turbulence in the atmosphere. While the bulk of Taylor Tobin's research projects focus on processing and analyzing this imaging data, additional projects may include software development, statistical analyses, and supplementary observations using different methods.
